Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital (formerly Spectrum Health) sits at 100 Michigan Street NE on the downtown Medical Mile, adjacent to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Trinity Health Grand Rapids (formerly Mercy Health Saint Mary’s) is at 200 Jefferson Avenue SE, about 1.5 miles away in the Heritage Hill area. Both are reachable within 10–15 minutes from most Grand Rapids neighborhoods, but US-131 construction zones and winter lake-effect snow can slow your drive. The Fred Meijer White Pine Trail and Millennium Park trails are popular third-trimester walking spots.

How it works
What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Grand Rapids
Not sure what the difference is?
A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Grand Rapids moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →
Grand Rapids is West Michigan’s largest city and a growing healthcare hub, anchored by the Medical Mile downtown. The birth community is smaller than Detroit’s but tight-knit, with organizations like Great Lakes Doulas offering sliding-scale support and West Michigan Midwifery providing the region’s only freestanding birth center. Families here tend to be pragmatic and community-oriented.
Continuous labor support
A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.
Evidence-based comfort techniques
Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.
Advocacy before and during birth
Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.
Postpartum follow-up, too
Most Grand Rapids doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.
Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.

Can My Doula Come to the Hospital With Me in Grand Rapids?
This is one of the top questions Grand Rapids moms ask, and the answer matters. Most hospitals in the Grand Rapids area do allow doulas, and many have explicit policies supporting continuous doula support during labor. Post-COVID visitor restrictions have mostly lifted, and hospitals generally recognize that doulas are not visitors: they're part of your care team.
That said, it's smart to call your hospital before labor starts and ask directly about their doula policy. Some questions to ask:
- "How many support people can I have in the delivery room?"
- "Does your hospital have a written doula policy I can review?"
- "Are doulas counted as visitors or as part of my care team?"
- "Is there a limit on support people during a C-section?"
Your doula will also know the policies at Grand Rapids hospitals and can help you navigate any hoops. And if your hospital pushes back, your birth plan gives you a written document that shows you've thought this through. grab the free template here.

Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital
Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital (formerly Spectrum Health Butterworth) is Grand Rapids’ flagship academic medical center on the Medical Mile downtown. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, physically connected on the same campus, houses West Michigan’s only verified Level IV NICU (stated directly on corewellhealth.org) — the highest level of neonatal care, capable of treating the most critically ill newborns including surgical cases. Corewell’s maternity services include maternal-fetal medicine specialists, 24/7 neonatology, and a high-volume labor unit. Use our free hospital birth plan template to get your preferences ready.

Trinity Health Grand Rapids Hospital
Trinity Health Grand Rapids (formerly Mercy Health Saint Mary’s) is at 200 Jefferson Avenue SE in central Grand Rapids. For Level III or IV neonatal care, families are typically transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital about 1.5 miles away. How Much Does a Doula Cost in Grand Rapids?
In the Grand Rapids area, birth doula packages typically range from $700 to $1,800. That usually includes prenatal visits, your birth, and postpartum follow-up. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.
If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:
- Medicaid: Unfortunately, your state does not yet cover doulas through Medicaid. Some community organizations and volunteer doula programs offer free or reduced-cost support. Ask at your local WIC office or community health center.
- HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
- Sliding-scale doulas: Many Grand Rapids doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
- Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.
Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula in MI?
Michigan Medicaid does NOT cover doula services as of 2026. There is no statewide Medicaid reimbursement for doula care. Grand Rapids families on Medicaid must pay out of pocket, though some doulas like Great Lakes Doulas offer sliding-scale fees or payment plans.
Most private insurers in Michigan (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Priority Health, UnitedHealthcare, McLaren) do not cover doula services as a standard benefit. Check your plan for out-of-network reimbursement or HSA/FSA eligibility. Contact your provider directly to confirm what’s covered.

What About a Midwife in Grand Rapids?
If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Grand Rapids moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:
Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.
- Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
- Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
- You can have both: Many Grand Rapids practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
- Birth centers: Grand Rapids has freestanding birth centers where midwives attend births in a home-like setting. See the details above.
