UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital sits on the Anschutz Medical Campus at 12605 East 16th Avenue in north-central Aurora, with direct access off I-225 and Colfax Avenue. Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree is about 15 miles south via I-25, serving families in south Aurora and the Tech Center corridor. Aurora’s dry winters and intense summer heat can make the drive to the hospital uncomfortable at 38 weeks — plan your route ahead of time. Cherry Creek State Park and the High Line Canal Trail are popular third-trimester walking spots with flat, well-maintained paths.

How it works
What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Aurora
Not sure what the difference is?
A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Aurora moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →
Aurora is Colorado’s third-largest city and one of its most diverse — over 160 languages are spoken in local schools. The birth community reflects that mix, with culturally concordant doula support and multilingual resources available. The Anschutz Medical Campus anchors the region’s academic medicine, and the city’s large military community (former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center site) means many families are familiar with navigating healthcare systems.
Continuous labor support
A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.
Evidence-based comfort techniques
Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.
Advocacy before and during birth
Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.
Postpartum follow-up, too
Most Aurora doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.
Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.

Can My Doula Come to the Hospital With Me in Aurora?
This is one of the top questions Aurora moms ask, and the answer matters. Most hospitals in the Aurora area do allow doulas, and many have explicit policies supporting continuous doula support during labor. Post-COVID visitor restrictions have mostly lifted, and hospitals generally recognize that doulas are not visitors: they're part of your care team.
That said, it's smart to call your hospital before labor starts and ask directly about their doula policy. Some questions to ask:
- "How many support people can I have in the delivery room?"
- "Does your hospital have a written doula policy I can review?"
- "Are doulas counted as visitors or as part of my care team?"
- "Is there a limit on support people during a C-section?"
Your doula will also know the policies at Aurora hospitals and can help you navigate any hoops. And if your hospital pushes back, your birth plan gives you a written document that shows you've thought this through. grab the free template here.

How Much Does a Doula Cost in Aurora?
In the Aurora area, birth doula packages typically range from $900 to $2,000. That usually includes prenatal visits, your birth, and postpartum follow-up. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.
If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:
- Medicaid: Good news: your state covers doula services through Medicaid. See the details below.
- HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
- Sliding-scale doulas: Many Aurora doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
- Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.
Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula in CO?
Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid) covers doula services as of July 1, 2024. Medicaid-enrolled doulas can be reimbursed for prenatal, labor, and postpartum visits. Verify your doula’s enrollment status through the Health First Colorado provider directory, and ask whether they accept Medicaid during your initial consultation.
If you’re on Health First Colorado (Medicaid), doula services are now covered. For private insurance (UnitedHealthcare, Anthem Blue Cross, Kaiser, Cigna), doula coverage varies by plan. Many Aurora families use HSA or FSA funds for out-of-pocket doula costs. Always call your insurer to confirm coverage before booking.

What About a Midwife in Aurora?
If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Aurora moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:
Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.
- Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
- Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
- You can have both: Many Aurora practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
- Birth centers: Aurora doesn't currently have a freestanding birth center, but midwifery care at local hospitals is still a great option.
