Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Tradition Hospital sits at 10000 SW Innovation Way in the master-planned Tradition community on PSL’s west side, right off I-95 at the Gatlin Boulevard exit — and that I-95/Gatlin interchange backs up steadily during afternoon rush, so if you’re coming from St. Lucie West or southern PSL, add 10 minutes to your estimate. St. Lucie Medical Center is at 1800 SE Tiffany Ave on the east side of town, reachable via US-1 (South Federal Highway) or the Turnpike’s Becker Road exit. PSL is roughly 120 square miles of suburban sprawl — if you live in western communities like Tradition or St. Lucie West, you’re 20–25 minutes from St. Lucie Medical Center on the east side, so know which hospital your OB delivers at before you’re timing contractions. The Turnpike runs north–south through the center of the city and I-95 runs along the western edge — both are your main arteries, and both slow down between 4 and 6 PM. Jensen Beach families typically deliver at Cleveland Clinic Martin North in Stuart, about 5–10 minutes south across the county line. For third-trimester walks, the Savannas Preserve State Park on the east side has flat trails through wetlands, and Tradition Square near the hospital has a walkable lakefront area that’s popular with young families in the evening.

How it works

What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Port St. Lucie

Not sure what the difference is?

A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Port St. Lucie moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →

A doula walking alongside an expectant mom, offering continuous labor support

Port St. Lucie is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States — population has surged past 240,000 with roughly 50% growth over the past decade, driven by South Florida families relocating north for affordable housing and remote-work flexibility. The birth community is still catching up to the population boom. Cleveland Clinic Martin Health and HCA’s St. Lucie Medical Center anchor a hospital-only birth landscape — there are no freestanding birth centers in the Treasure Coast region, which is a significant gap for a city this size. CNMs practice within hospital systems, and Florida’s refusal to license CPMs means out-of-hospital birth options are extremely limited. Doula support exists through groups like Treasure Coast Doulas, but the community is small relative to the volume of young families arriving every month.

Continuous labor support

A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.

Evidence-based comfort techniques

Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.

Advocacy before and during birth

Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.

Postpartum follow-up, too

Most Port St. Lucie doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.

Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.

Expect $1,200 to $2,500 for a birth doula. Check with local doulas for sliding-scale options.

Can My Doula Come to the Hospital With Me in Port St. Lucie?

This is one of the top questions Port St. Lucie moms ask, and the answer matters. Most hospitals in the Port St. Lucie area do allow doulas, and many have explicit policies supporting continuous doula support during labor. Post-COVID visitor restrictions have mostly lifted, and hospitals generally recognize that doulas are not visitors: they're part of your care team.

That said, it's smart to call your hospital before labor starts and ask directly about their doula policy. Some questions to ask:

  • "How many support people can I have in the delivery room?"
  • "Does your hospital have a written doula policy I can review?"
  • "Are doulas counted as visitors or as part of my care team?"
  • "Is there a limit on support people during a C-section?"

Your doula will also know the policies at Port St. Lucie hospitals and can help you navigate any hoops. And if your hospital pushes back, your birth plan gives you a written document that shows you've thought this through. grab the free template here.

Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Tradition Hospital

It has a Level II Special Care Nursery (managing babies ≥32 weeks gestation; transfers complex cases to Martin North’s Level III NICU), 24/7 OB hospitalist coverage, epidural availability, CNM-friendly policies, and lactation consultants. The hospital handles an estimated 1,200–1,500 births per year and draws heavily from the young families relocating into the Tradition and St. Lucie West communities. If you’re delivering at Tradition, having your birth plan ready keeps your preferences clear in a hospital that’s busy and growing fast. Use our free hospital birth plan template to get started.

Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Martin North Hospital

Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Martin North Hospital, at 800 SE Hospital Ave in Stuart (Martin County, about 10–15 miles from PSL), has the Treasure Coast’s only Level III NICU — the regional referral center for high-risk pregnancies and critically ill newborns, with 24/7 neonatologists, sustained ventilation capability, and the highest-acuity neonatal care in the immediate region. It’s also the highest-volume birthing hospital in the area with an estimated 2,000–2,500 births per year. Martin North’s dedicated maternity wing, CNM practices, lactation support, and childbirth education make it the go-to for complex pregnancies throughout St. Lucie and Martin counties. If you’re navigating a high-risk pregnancy, this is likely where your OB will refer you. Use our free hospital birth plan template so your team has something specific to work from.

St. Lucie Medical Center

St. Lucie Medical Center, at 1800 SE Tiffany Ave on PSL’s east side, is an HCA Healthcare hospital that’s been serving the community since 1983. It has a Level II Special Care Nursery (transfers complex cases to Martin North’s Level III NICU), 24/7 OB/GYN and anesthesia coverage, midwifery care through affiliated practices, lactation consultants, and childbirth classes. The hospital handles an estimated 1,000–1,400 births per year and serves central and eastern PSL. If we’re being real, PSL’s sprawl means this east-side hospital is a long drive from the Tradition area — so confirm which hospital your provider delivers at early, not at 38 weeks. Use our free hospital birth plan template to walk in prepared.

How Much Does a Doula Cost in Port St. Lucie?

In the Port St. Lucie area, birth doula packages typically range from $1,200 to $2,500. That usually includes prenatal visits, your birth, and postpartum follow-up. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.

If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:

  • Medicaid: Unfortunately, your state does not yet cover doulas through Medicaid. Some community organizations and volunteer doula programs offer free or reduced-cost support. Ask at your local WIC office or community health center.
  • HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
  • Sliding-scale doulas: Many Port St. Lucie doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
  • Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.

Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula in FL?

As of 2026, Florida Medicaid does not cover doula services. Florida has not enacted legislation to add Medicaid doula coverage. St. Lucie County families on Medicaid should check with their managed care plan (Staywell, Sunshine Health, Simply Healthcare, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan) about any maternal wellness benefits that might include doula support. Roughly 35–40% of births in St. Lucie County are Medicaid-covered, making this a significant equity gap. Contact Florida Medicaid at 1-877-254-1055 or visit flmedicaidmanagedcare.com for current plan information.

Whether doula services are partially covered varies by plan in the Port St. Lucie area. Cleveland Clinic Martin Health accepts most major insurers. HSA and FSA funds can help cover out-of-pocket doula costs. South Florida’s employer market increasingly includes maternal wellness benefits — check with your provider about doula coverage or reimbursement. Ask your doula for a superbill for insurance reimbursement.

What About a Midwife in Port St. Lucie?

If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Port St. Lucie moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:

Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.

  • Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
  • Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
  • You can have both: Many Port St. Lucie practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
  • Birth centers: Port St. Lucie doesn't currently have a freestanding birth center, but midwifery care at local hospitals is still a great option.

Your Questions About Doulas & Midwives in Port St. Lucie

The things Port St. Lucie moms ask us most, answered honestly.

How much does a doula cost in Port St. Lucie?

Expect to pay $1,200 to $2,500 for a doula in Port St. Lucie. The Treasure Coast doula community is smaller than in South Florida metros, so start your search early. Some doulas may charge a travel fee if they’re commuting from Stuart or Jupiter, so ask upfront. The investment typically covers prenatal visits, labor support, and postpartum check-ins. Grab the free birth plan template and start thinking about what matters most to you.

Does Medicaid cover doulas in Port St. Lucie?

Not yet — Florida’s Medicaid doesn’t cover doulas right now. But that doesn’t mean you’re alone. Community doulas and sliding-scale options exist — many doulas would rather work with your budget than see you go without. Some doulas even reserve pro bono spots. Advocacy groups are working on changing this. Ask any doula you interview about payment plans and reduced-fee spots. And grab the free birth plan template — no matter who’s in the room with you, knowing what you want is your superpower.

Which hospitals in Port St. Lucie accommodate birth plans?

Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Tradition Hospital (Level II NICU), Cleveland Clinic Martin Health – Martin North Hospital in Stuart (Level III NICU, highest-level in the Treasure Coast), and St. Lucie Medical Center (Level II NICU) all offer labor and delivery and generally accommodate birth plans. Doulas are welcomed at all three — confirm current visitor and support-person policies during your hospital tour. For the most complex neonatal cases, Martin North’s Level III NICU is the regional referral center. Grab the free birth plan template so you walk in knowing exactly what you want.

Are there birth centers in Port St. Lucie?

No — there are no freestanding birth centers in Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, or the broader Treasure Coast region as of 2026. Florida’s birth center regulations and lack of CPM licensure make out-of-hospital birth options very limited. Cleveland Clinic Martin Health offers midwifery-model care within the hospital setting for families seeking a lower-intervention approach. The nearest freestanding birth centers are approximately 45–60 minutes south in Palm Beach County. Grab the free birth plan template to think through whether a hospital birth center-style program or a longer drive to a freestanding birth center is right for you.
