All of the major organs and body systems are now developing, even though everything is still very small. Web-like hands and feet are visible now, and the umbilical cord is formed and carrying blood between your baby and the placenta.

What you might be feeling at 8 weeks
Your first prenatal appointment may happen this week. Physically, nausea and exhaustion continue. You might notice dizziness, vivid dreams, and your clothes starting to feel tight even though you're not showing yet. The relief of hearing the heartbeat at your appointment is unlike anything else.

The first appointment. I still get emotional thinking about it. With my first baby, I was so nervous walking into that exam room that my hands were shaking. And then hearing that little heartbeat for the first time — there is nothing in the world that prepares you for that sound. I burst into tears every single time, all seven pregnancies. If your provider only does bloodwork this visit and doesn't do an ultrasound, don't panic — that's completely normal. And if you've been feeling terrible and suddenly feel a little better today, that's okay too. The relief you feel when things go well at this appointment is something you'll remember forever.

8 weeks pregnant: your questions answered
What happens at the first prenatal appointment? +
Expect bloodwork, a medical history review, possibly an ultrasound, and a discussion of your due date. Some providers do an ultrasound at this visit; others wait until later. Both approaches are normal.
Will I hear the heartbeat? +
If your provider does an ultrasound at 8 weeks, you may see and hear the heartbeat. If not, don't worry — the heartbeat is often not checked externally until 10-12 weeks.
