40 Weeks Pregnant: Due date week

Baby development

Your baby at 40 weeks

You've made it to your due date week. Your baby is fully developed and ready to meet you. The brain and lungs finish their final preparations now, and your baby is settled into position for birth. You're so close to holding your little one.

Your body this week

What you might be feeling at 40 weeks

Your due date. Only about 5% of babies arrive on this date. It's an estimate, not a deadline. If your provider talks about induction, ask questions — what's the medical reason? What are the alternatives? You've grown a whole human. Trust yourself and your body.

You made it to your due date. I want you to know something that most pregnancy resources don't say clearly enough: only about 5% of babies are born on their actual due date. It's an estimate, not a deadline. With three of my seven, I went past 40 weeks, and every time I felt like my body was failing me. It wasn't. Your baby and your body are coordinating something extraordinary, and that takes the time it takes. If your provider starts talking about induction, ask questions. What's the medical reason? What are the alternatives? What are the risks? You have the right to understand your options. You've grown a whole human. Whatever happens in these final days — whether your baby comes tonight or in two weeks — you are ready. Trust yourself. Trust your body. You're about to do the most incredible thing you'll ever do.
