Baylor Scott & White sits on the west side of Temple off 31st Street and Interstate 35, and during shift change at 7 AM and 7 PM that whole medical district turns into a slow crawl — if you're delivering at BSW, know the back entrance off 31st Street, because the main entrance on I-35 frontage gets backed up. AdventHealth Central Texas is about 10 minutes south in Belton, right off I-14 near the mall. Temple's Lion's Park has a flat, shaded walking loop along the creek that's a go-to for third-trimester moms — and it's only 5 minutes from BSW.

How it works
What Doula & Midwife Support Looks Like in Temple
Not sure what the difference is?
A midwife is your medical provider: she can deliver your baby, write prescriptions, and monitor your health. A doula is your support person: she keeps you comfortable, informed, and emotionally held, but doesn't do medical tasks. You can have both, and many Temple moms do. Learn more about what a doula actually does →
Temple is Central Texas's medical hub — Baylor Scott & White brings families from across the region for obstetric and neonatal care, and the Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) military community means a constant flow of young families navigating both TRICARE and civilian insurance. The birth community here is small but experienced, with doulas who know the BSW system inside and out.
Continuous labor support
A doula stays with you from early labor through delivery. No shift changes, no leaving the room.
Evidence-based comfort techniques
Breathing, counter-pressure, position changes, proven to reduce C-section rates and shorten labor.
Advocacy before and during birth
Your doula helps you understand your options and practice saying what you want, before you're in the delivery room.
Postpartum follow-up, too
Most Temple doula packages include at least one postpartum visit, because birth support doesn't end at delivery.
Whether this is your first baby or you're preparing for a VBAC, understanding what a doula does, and how a doula can change your birth experience, can help you decide what support is right for you. Planning for a specific scenario? Read our VBAC birth plan guide or our C-section birth plan template.

Can My Doula Come to the Hospital With Me in Temple?
This is one of the top questions Temple moms ask, and the answer matters. Most hospitals in the Temple area do allow doulas, and many have explicit policies supporting continuous doula support during labor. Post-COVID visitor restrictions have mostly lifted, and hospitals generally recognize that doulas are not visitors: they're part of your care team.
That said, it's smart to call your hospital before labor starts and ask directly about their doula policy. Some questions to ask:
- "How many support people can I have in the delivery room?"
- "Does your hospital have a written doula policy I can review?"
- "Are doulas counted as visitors or as part of my care team?"
- "Is there a limit on support people during a C-section?"
Your doula will also know the policies at Temple hospitals and can help you navigate any hoops. And if your hospital pushes back, your birth plan gives you a written document that shows you've thought this through. grab the free template here.

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple is one of the largest hospitals in Central Texas, with one of the region's most advanced NICUs, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and a high-volume L&D unit that serves families from Killeen, Fort Cavazos, Belton, and across the region. Contact BSW directly for current NICU level verification. BSW is where many high-risk pregnancies in Central Texas end up — having your birth plan ready before you arrive makes a real difference, especially in a hospital system this large. AdventHealth Central Texas
AdventHealth Central Texas, in Belton about 10 minutes south of Temple, offers maternity care with a NICU for babies who need extra support — contact AdventHealth directly for current NICU level verification. If we're being real, AdventHealth is smaller and quieter than BSW, which some families prefer — but it also means fewer specialists on-site for complex cases, so having a doula who knows when to advocate for a transfer matters.

How Much Does a Doula Cost in Temple?
In the Temple area, birth doula packages typically range from $800 to $2,200. That usually includes prenatal visits, your birth, and postpartum follow-up. See our full doula cost breakdown for what's included and what to ask about. If you're also thinking about support after baby arrives, learn what a postpartum doula does and how one can help.
If that number feels steep, you're not alone, and there are options:
- Medicaid: Unfortunately, your state does not yet cover doulas through Medicaid. Some community organizations and volunteer doula programs offer free or reduced-cost support. Ask at your local WIC office or community health center.
- HSA/FSA: Many families don't realize that doula services can often be paid for with HSA or FSA funds, since birth support qualifies as a medical expense under most plans. Check with your plan administrator.
- Sliding-scale doulas: Many Temple doulas offer payment plans, sliding-scale fees, or reduced packages. Don't be afraid to ask.
- Student doulas: Doulas in training often attend births at reduced rates. It's a great option if budget is tight.
Does Medicaid or Insurance Cover a Doula in TX?
Texas Medicaid covers doula services as of September 2024 under SB 750 for eligible enrollees, including Bell County's STAR managed care plans. Fort Cavazos families on TRICARE should check with their TRICARE regional contractor for doula coverage — TRICARE does not currently cover doulas, but HSA and FSA funds can often be used. Call Texas Medicaid at 1-877-543-7669 or visit YourTexasBenefits.com to confirm your plan's doula coverage.
Bell County has a large TRICARE population from Fort Cavazos — TRICARE does not currently cover doula services, but many military families use HSA or FSA funds for birth support. Baylor Scott & White Health Plan and FirstCare Health Plans are major civilian insurers in the area. Check your specific plan for maternal wellness or doula coverage benefits.

What About a Midwife in Temple?
If you're considering a midwife, you're in good company. More Temple moms are choosing midwifery care each year. Here's what to know:
Not sure whether you need a doula, a midwife, or both? Our doula vs. midwife guide breaks it down clearly.
- Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) work in hospitals and birth centers and are covered by Medicaid in all 50 states.
- Midwives vs. OBs: Midwives spend more time with you: longer appointments, more conversation, less rushed. OBs are surgeons trained for complications. Both are valid choices for different situations.
- You can have both: Many Temple practices pair midwives and OBs so you get midwifery-style care with a doctor backing you up if needed.
- Birth centers: Temple doesn't currently have a freestanding birth center, but midwifery care at local hospitals is still a great option.
